Reader,
do you know what the hottest buzzword online is?
Yes, you probably guessed it:
“Community”
Everyone and their grandma talk about “building a community”.
Don’t believe me?
Scroll through your timeline and you’ll see it everywhere:
- “Join my amazing free community!”
- “I love my community!”
- “Building a community of like-minded [insert interest group]!”
Everyone’s suddenly a community builder.
Everyone has a thriving community.
Everyone’s part of multiple communities.
Have you noticed?
But here’s what most won’t admit:
They’re just calling their followers a community because it feels better.
It sounds more important. More meaningful.
After all, “I have a community” hits different than “I have followers”, right?
It’s not about platforms or passive income either.
It’s about ego. About status. About belonging to this exclusive club of “community builders”.
Because everyone knows: people are wired for community.
They want to belong and connect. And having a community not only makes you feel good about yourself but also converts better.
The truth?
Most don’t actually want community.
They want the status of “having a community” without doing the real work. And an easy way to funnel people into their business.
Think about it: When you have an audience,
- they follow you.
- Like your posts.
- Hopefully buy your stuff.
It’s comfortable. Safe. You stay in control behind your content wall.
But real community? That’s different. Real community
- grows naturally.
- connects beyond you.
- builds relationships.
- creates value together.
- still exists when you take a day off.
Real community building is hard work.
"Community is about doing something together that makes belonging matter."
- Brian Solis
- It’s not about fancy platforms or engagement prompts.
- It’s about creating genuine value and connections.
- It’s building an ecosystem with sustainable and consistent value flow.
This isn’t just semantics. It’s about what you’re actually building:
A stage for your performance? Or a space for genuine connection?
There’s no right or wrong.
But please, let’s not pretend they’re the same thing.
Until next week,
Masha
